Overview
Coconino County and the City of Flagstaff have joined forces to preserve one of their largest economic engines, Camp Navajo (an AZ National Guard base), and the US Naval Observatory through a collaborative planning effort to develop the Coconino Military Installation Sustainability (MIS) project. The MIS focused on actions the community can implement to assist in preserving the military missions and promote regional resiliency.
Join us to learn more about the innovative strategies, which include using state-of-the-art technology and unique and tailored methodology developed to achieve the above goal. The project included using lighting and heat data collected from on-the-ground surveyors and drones entered into a specific GIS model to create a zoning code enforcement tool that identified and documents non-conforming commercial outdoor lighting database. Other strategies developed included, a public outreach campaign, and public outreach materials that promote dark skies, wildfire prevention, and community awareness of Camp Navajo and NOFS, draft state legislation and an engagement strategy to protect the installations from incompatible land use encroachment, a forest industry feasibility study and market analysis that recommends strategies to support and grow the local economy—particularly industries that improve forest health and reduce wildfire risks, and an installation resiliency report that conducted a risk vulnerability assessment for natural and human-caused risks to the region and Camp Navajo and NOFS such as wildfire, drought, floods, and climate change, and defines implementable strategies to mitigate those risks.
